Are solar panels worth it in New Jersey

New Jersey solar incentives & tax credits

Federal solar tax credit

The most significant incentive to install solar panels for homes and businesses is the federal tax credit. Right now, the federal tax credit is equal to 30% of the total installed costs of installing a solar system. So, a $20,000 solar system will earn a tax credit of $6,000!

Net metering

New Jersey has a state-wide net metering policy for all utility companies regulated by the Board of Public Utilities. Each utility must compensate customers for net excess solar generation at the full retail rate. Customers are credited on a month-to-month basis and are also compensated for any Net Excess Generation (NEGs) accumulated at the end of each annual billing cycle. This is a perfect scenario for a net metering policy to ensure you get the best compensation.

 

 

New Jersey SuSI program 

Utilities in New Jersey do not offer direct incentives to their solar customers. However, New Jersey utilities must meet specific renewable energy goals, which they reach by purchasing solar renewable energy credits, called SREC-IIs, under the Successor Solar Incentive (SuSI) program. 

For each megawatt hour of solar energy your solar system produces, you will receive $85. That means if your solar panels produce 6 megawatt-hours of electricity in a year, you'll earn $510 - and that's on top of the savings you get through net metering! 

Property and sales tax exemptions

New Jersey offers a property and sales tax exemption for installing solar systems to your home or business. This means that 100% of the assessed value of the solar system is exempt from the homeowner’s property taxes. Along with that, sales tax will not be added to the equipment used in your installation.

How do solar panels work?

Grid-tied solar system

Solar panels are mounted on your roof then wired together, and the power generated flows into an inverter where direct current (DC) electricity is converted into alternating current (AC) electricity. This electricity is either used by your home or is exported to the utility grid.

Hybrid solar system

In hybrid solar systems, rooftop solar panels are connected to both a solar battery and the electric grid. The solar electricity generated by your panels that your home does not use is stored in the battery instead of being sent to the grid, which reduces your reliance on the utility while also providing backup power when needed. Battery storage is still expensive but you may be able to reduce costs by using state incentives.

Off-grid solar system

Off-grid solar systems are not connected to the grid at all, so all of your energy needs must be met by the sun. There is no utility to fall back on. The solar installation needs to power your home not only during the day, but after dark as well, so many solar panels and a large battery system are required. These systems are often expensive and don’t make sense for homes that have access to the grid.
